This morning I took another walk to the Kunsthal because it turns out that museums and galleries were closed yesterday (Monday) but luckily it was just one block from the hotel. The Kunsthal is a contemporary art gallery designed by Rem Koolhaas back in 1992. The building still holds up with the more recent architecture in Rotterdam and many people, like myself, go there specifically to see the building. Many of the spaces are ramped or have sloped walls and ceilings and the finishes mainly consist of architectural concrete, metals and plastics. The auditorium is one of the main features with its large glass side wall looking out in to the park. During this trip I will be exploring the variety that exists in the contemporary architecture of the Netherlands. In addition to the general architectural aesthetic I will be attempting to find those spaces that have been made usable & comfortable by architectural moves to manipulate natural light. I will endeavor to document my journey here. Any suggestions of specific locations or buildings to visit are very welcome.
