My hotel is so new that it is still partially under construction. The Citizen M is a new brand of boutique hotel that is planned to be in most major European cities. Amsterdam has the first of these hotels that are aimed at mobile citizens. The facade is designed to appear like many stacked boxes. Each room has one large window that spans wall to wall and floor to ceiling (7'-6" x 9') which leans and protrudes at various angles. The hotel features the latest in technology and compact contemporary design. A self check-in system means there is no traditional reception desk. Rooms are controlled with a wireless device with which you can adjust lighting & color, blinds, temperature, music & tv. An interesting feature is that you can program the alarm system to automatically turn on the lights open the blinds and play music. A very comfortable hotel with friendly staff.
During this trip I will be exploring the variety that exists in the contemporary architecture of the Netherlands. In addition to the general architectural aesthetic I will be attempting to find those spaces that have been made usable & comfortable by architectural moves to manipulate natural light. I will endeavor to document my journey here. Any suggestions of specific locations or buildings to visit are very welcome.
